OPERA MULTIMEDIALE MUSICALE ONLINE SUI CAMBIAMENTI CLIMATICI COMPOSTA DA ELIZABETH SWADOS

Weather è stata composta da Elizabeth Swados e scritta da Filippo Consales, con l’obiettivo di sensibilizzare il pubblico attraverso l’arte alla tematica del cambiamento climatico e dell’impatto umano sul mondo naturale. Viene prodotto attraverso una collaborazione internazionale che coinvolge organizzazioni partner e artisti in Europa, Stati Uniti, Corea e Messico.

“Le cose non vanno bene, il mondo sembra confuso, tutto sembra fuori tempo, ogni cosa sembra scolorita, ogni rumore sembra troppo forte o troppo piano, le stagioni cambiano troppo in fretta o rimangono troppo a lungo, il clima oggi è una musica stonata… quindi ho voluto scrivere qualcosa per chiedergli di tornare indietro, urlare forte mentre lui ci urla contro”.

“Weather” è una delle ultime opere musicali composte dalla scrittrice, compositrice e regista americana Elizabeth Swados. L’obiettivo di questo “oratorio drammatico”, come lo ha definito la stessa Swados, è quello di utilizzare la musica e il teatro come strumenti per sensibilizzare il pubblico nei confronti delle urgenti tematiche legate ai cambiamenti climatici. Con sonorità e ritmi che mescolano le atmosfere della musica occidentale a quelle della world music, il componimento raccoglie una grande varietà di storie, descrizioni scientifiche, citazioni di telegiornali e descrizioni mitologiche che raccontano di tempeste, distruzioni, rinascita e bellezza. Nella sua caleidoscopica visione, l’opera è una sorta di inno alla forza della natura ed allo stesso tempo un monito che vuole incoraggiare le persone a riflettere sulle emergenze ambientali che il nostro pianeta sta vivendo. In un alternarsi di parti strumentali e canzoni, ognuna invoca racconti ed ambienti diversi, indipendenti tra di loro. Il filo conduttore, lungo l’alternarsi delle 11 canzoni, è il continuo trasformarsi del tempo che si sviluppa seguendo l’evoluzione di un anno sulla terra, tratteggiando l’andamento delle stagioni. A tratti divertente, a tratti spaventoso o tragico, ogni atmosfera produce suoni diversi come diverse sono le lingue parlate o cantate nell’opera.

Le canzoni saranno accompagnate da una raccolta di animazioni visive, azioni performative e video, che mostrano i diversi luoghi, ambientazioni, cambiamenti climatici delle 11 canzoni.

Il pubblico potrà assistere all’evento in uno spazio 360° online, composto da 12 stanze, come i mesi dell’anno, ciascuna comprendente una canzone con relativo video, animazioni e una serie di riferimenti che aiutano a contestualizzare l’argomento delle canzoni. Navigando attraverso lo spazio online e interagendo con i diversi contenuti visivi e musicali dell’opera, il pubblico avrà la possibilità di scoprire le storie così come i riferimenti scientifici o culturali dietro quelle storie.

UN PROGETTO SOSTENIBILE

La salvaguardia del pianeta è la priorità globale più importante. Ce lo ricorda soprattutto in questo tempo di crisi e trasformazione, dove le comunità sono costrette a confrontarsi con la loro fragilità di fronte a fenomeni naturali incontrollabili.

Per contribuire alla promozione di una più ampia consapevolezza su questi temi, il progetto unisce le forze con La MaMa Umbria International, CultureHub Europe e New York, La MaMa ETC NY, l’Università delle Arti di Seoul e il Comune di Spoleto, formando una partnership che collaborerà alla produzione dell’opera multimediale online “Weather”.

Il settore delle Performing Arts è stato pesantemente colpito dall’attuale crisi e tutte le industrie creative stanno avvertendo la necessità di sviluppare nuove opportunità sia di produzione che di condivisione che siano allo stesso tempo sostenibili e sicure. Attraverso il progetto “Weather”, i partner che collaborano stanno progettando di sviluppare uno spazio virtuale di performance online in cui designer creativi, musicisti, cantanti, artisti e pubblico potranno connettersi da diverse parti del mondo. Lo scopo è utilizzare la tecnologia per “sanare le distanze” che ci dividono, neutralizzando le incertezze di questo tempo, favorendo la fiducia e aiutando le persone a riconnettersi tra loro e con l’ambiente.

In un difficile momento di trasformazione, agli artisti viene affidata la capacità di reinterpretare ed elaborare paure, incertezze e aspirazioni del presente, per catalizzare nuovi processi già in atto e preparare il terreno per una rinascita culturale. La natura ci insegna che le forti tempeste non solo mettono a nudo la distruzione, ma liberano anche gli alberi da rami sterili, che impediscono loro di germogliare in nuove direzioni con maggiore vigore. Il progetto “Weather” spera anche di contribuire allo sviluppo di un nuovo vigore nelle Performing Arts.

PIÙ DI UN SEMPLICE PROGETTO ARTISTICO

Weather non si propone solo come progetto artistico/formativo, ma come percorso di creazione di una comunità che vuole dar corpo e voce alle istanze ambientali. L’obiettivo è quello di riuscire a coinvolgere un ampio spettro di persone: artisti, attivisti, esperti, ricercatori, amministratori, imprenditori e singoli cittadini.

Per il suo contenuto e il suo messaggio unico, il Comune di Spoleto ha accettato di sostenere finanziariamente e logisticamente “Weather” e di inserire il progetto nell’Agenda 2030 per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile dell’ONU, come esempio di innovazione artistica e tecnologica, che può aiutare a minimizzare l’impronta ecologica di produzioni artistiche, massimizzando la portata e la forza del messaggio. La performance online di “Weather” riceverà un accreditamento di sostenibilità, attraverso la certificazione ufficiale di (EMAS) Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, l’agenzia di gestione ambientale sviluppata dalla Commissione Europea.

La situazione che viviamo in questo tempo di crisi ci pone di fronte ad una sfida importante, quella della discontinuità, chiedendoci di modificare le prassi e i modelli che abbiamo conosciuto sino ad ora. Per dare una risposta alla crisi attuale ed ai suoi assestamenti, occorre progettare con gli strumenti del presente (multimedia, web), utilizzando nuove forme di incontro tra arte, linguaggi e spazi; incoraggiare il dialogo e lo scambio tra gli artisti affinchè traducano attraverso l’arte, il cambiamento culturale e sociale in atto. Un progetto che dimostri anche a livello artistico, il nostro grado di interconnessione non solo ad un destino comune, ma soprattutto ad un comune intento e ad una comune energia creativa.

Nei mesi precedenti alla presentazione ufficiale dell’opera, prevista a Gennaio 2021 saranno svolti nella città di Spoleto e fruibili a tutti tramite diretta streaming, laboratori per bambini e ragazzi, workshop, tavole rotonde e webinair con le aziende italiane impegnate nella salvaguardia dell’ambiente. In questo modo “Weather” acquisisce il valore aggiunto di un’esperienza educativa e sociale, contribuendo a riunire una comunità in una sorta di azione collettiva che possa dare voce alle emergenze ambientali.

Weather was composed by Elizabeth Swados and written by Filippo Consales, with the objective of raising awareness through art on the issues of climate change and the human impact on the natural world. It will be produced through an international collaboration involving partner organizations and artists in Europe, United States, Korea and Mexico.

ABOUT WEATHER#

“Things are not going well, the world seems confused, everything seems out of time, everything seems discolored, every noise seems too loud or too slow, the seasons change too quickly or remain too long, the weather today is out of tune music… so I wanted to write something to ask him to go back, shout loudly while he yells at us“.

“Weather” is one of the latest works composed by American writer, composer and director Elizabeth Swados. The goal of this “dramatic oratorio”, as Swados defined it, is to use music and theater as tools to raise public awareness on urgent issues related to climate change. With sounds and rhythms that mix the atmospheres of western music and world music, the composition collects a great variety of stories, scientific descriptions, newscasts and mythological narrations that tell of storms, destructions, rebirth and beauty. This kaleidoscopic vision is a kind of hymn to the force of nature and at the same time a warning that wants to encourage people to reflect on the environmental emergencies that our planet is facing. An alternation of instrumental parts and songs invoke different stories and environments, independent of each other. The guiding thread is the continuous transformation of the weather following the evolution of a year on earth, and outlining the changing seasons. Sometimes funny, sometimes frightening or tragic, each atmosphere produces different sounds, as different are also the languages spoken or sung in the opera.

The songs will be accompanied by a collection of visual animations, performative actions and videos, showing the different locations, space climatic changes of the 11 songs.

The audience will be able to watch the event in an online 360° space, composed of 12 rooms, like the months of the year, each including one song with the related video, animations and a series of references that help contextualize the topic of the songs. Navigating through the online space and interacting with the different visual and musical contents of the opera, the audience will have the chance to uncover the stories as well as the scientific or cultural references behind those stories.

A SUSTAINABLE PROJECT

The safeguard of the planet is the most important global priority. We are especially reminded about it in this time of crisis and transformation, when communities are forced to face their fragility in front of uncontrollable natural phenomenons.

In order to contribute to the promotion of a wider awareness on this issues, the project is joining forces with La MaMa Umbria International, CultureHub Europe and New York, La MaMa ETC di NY, Seoul Institute of the Arts and the Municipality of Spoleto, forming a partnership that will collaborate at the production of the online multimedia opera “Weather”.

The Performing Arts field has been heavily affected by the current crisis, and all the creative industries are experiencing the need to develop new opportunities for both production and sharing which is at the same time sustainable and safe. Through the “Weather” project, the collaborating partners are planning to develop a virtual online performing space in which creative designers, musicians, singers, performers and audience will be able to connect from different parts of the world. The purpose is to use the technology to “heal the distances” that divide us, neutralizing the uncertainties of this time, fostering trust and helping people reconnect with each other and the environment.

In a challenging moment of transformation the artists are entrusted with the ability to reinterpret and elaborate the fears, uncertainties and aspirations of the present, to catalyze new processes already underway and to prepare the ground for a cultural rebirth. Nature teaches us that strong storms not only bares destruction, but also frees trees from sterile branches, which prevent them from sprouting in new directions with greater vigor. The project “Weather” also hopes to contribute to the development of a new vigor in the Performing Arts.

MORE THAN JUST AN ART PROJECT

Weather is not only proposed as an artistic project, but as a path to create a larger community of supporter and collaborators that wants to give body and voice to environmental issues. The goal is to be able to involve a broad spectrum of people: artists, activists, experts, researchers, administrators, entrepreneurs and individual citizens.

Because of its content and unique message, the Municipality of Spoleto has accepted to financially and logistically support “Weather” and to include the project in in the 2030 Agenda ONU for Sustainable Development, as an example of artistic and technological innovation, which can help to minimize the ecological footprint of performing arts productions, while maximizing the outreach and strength of the message. The online performance of “Weather” will receive a sustainability accreditation, through the official certification of (EMAS) Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, the environmental management agency developed by the European Commission.

The situation we live in in this time of crisis presents us with an important challenge, the discontinuity, asking us to change the practices and models which we are all familiar To give an answer to the current crisis and its adjustments, it is necessary to design with the tools of the present (multimedia, web), using new forms of encounter between art, languages and spaces; encourage dialogue and exchange between artists so that they translate the cultural and social change taking place through art. A project that demonstrates on an artistic level, our degree of interconnection not only with a common destiny, but above all with a common intent and a common creative energy.

In the months preceding the official presentation of the event, scheduled for January 2021, will be held in the City of Spoleto and accessible to all via live streaming, workshops for children and teenagers, workshops, round tables and webinairs with Italian companies engaged in environmental protection. In this way, “Weather” acquires the additional value of an educational and social experience, helping to bring together a community in a sort of collective action that can give voice to environmental emergencies.

Essa, infatti, non è soltanto la mancanza d’acqua ma è, più in generale, una privazione che ci pone in una situazione di bisogno. Senza acqua non si può vivere. ‘Libera’ di don Ciotti è una delle realtà che si impegnano per gli altri, quotidianamente. Nel giugno 2012, la mafia bruciò numerosi uliveti che le erano stati confiscati e erano stati affidati temporaneamente all’associazione. Possiamo accettare tutto ciò che accade intorno a noi come un moribondo senz’acqua o provare a cambiare le cose, essendo vivi e protagonisti della nostra vita. Un modello e una fonte d’ispirazione per chi ci è accanto, per far sì che il mondo non secchi’’.

We can accept everything that happens around us like a dying man without water or try to change things, being alive and actively involved in our life. A model and a source of inspiration to those close to us, to ensure that the world does not dry”.

Per propiziare la pioggia, nei villaggi balcanici, erano soliti scegliere una o più ragazze che venivano spogliate, vestite di rami e foglie, e portate di casa in casa. Chi riceveva le loro visite, le dava loro del cibo e le bagnava. La ragazza rappresenta anche la terra vergine, nuda, in attesa di far maturare i frutti”.

“Dodola is an ancient slavic goddess, the god of rain, the wife of Perun (God of Thunder). To propitiate the rain in the balcanic villages usually they choosed one or more girls that were unspoiled and dressed with branches and leaves, bringing them door to door. The ones that received their visit, overlooked, giving food and wet them. The girl could be the earth, virgin, nude, wating to ripens the fruit’’.

“Katrina is one of the most violent storms in history, is a woman’s name and the city hardest hit was New Orleans, the city of music. So I thought to identify the hurricane with a wild and careless dance of this Caribbean woman (Hurricane began in the Bahamas)”.

L’arcobaleno è quindi il sentiero che lei percorre tra il cielo e la Terra. Ma è anche il patto tra Dio e Noè e, più in generale, l’umanità. L’arcobaleno è simbolo di speranza, ci fa sorridere e meravigliare, perché tira fuori il bambino che è in tutti noi’’.

“Iris in Greek mythology is the goddess who personified the rainbow, the messenger of Hera. It’s a winged woman, beautiful, dressed in dew drops, mother of Eros. So the rainbow is the path that she cover between the sky and the Earth. But it is also the pact between God and Noah, and therefore with the humanity. The rainbow is a symbol of hope, makes us smile and wonder, because it brings out the kid in all of us”.
